I’m interested in the question: “Where do the elements in our periodic table get synthesized in the universe?”. As a PhD student at DAWN I study the light coming special explosions when two neutron stars merge, known as kilonovae. From their spectra, I try to identify which heavy elements get synthesized in these events. Addressing this question is a multi-disciplinary quest, and I have been involved in it from many facets. As a master’s student I studied the atoms and nuclei of heavy elements in the laboratory.
