I’m interested in the question: “Where do the elements in our periodic table get synthesized in the universe?”. For half a century it was speculated that when two neutron stars collide, the explosion would have the conditions to synthesize elements even up to uranium. As a PhD student at DAWN, I study the light coming such explosions, which glow as “kilonovae”. From the spectrum of their light, I try to directly infer what was produced. Addressing this question is a multi-disciplinary quest, and I have been involved in it from many facets. As a master’s student I studied the atoms and nuclei of heavy elements in the laboratory.
